Do you know why most diets don’t work? It’s because they’re set up to fail. You get exhausted worrying about eating the “right food,” sick and tired of spending hours in the gym, and blowing a week’s worth of progress in one day. It doesn’t have to be that way. That’s exactly why I don’t believe in diets. Would you like me to help you break that cycle before summer gets here in a few weeks?

"I will start next month." "Reach out to me for the next one.” Is that what you’re always saying but it seems like “next month” and the “next one” never seem to arrive? You’re eating healthy, sticking to your exercise plan, losing weight, liking how your clothes fit…Success! Then ___________ happens. Maybe there was birthday cake at the office. Your partner left you. Your boss reprimanded you. You went out to lunch with friends. Before you know it, you’ve had a “snack-cident,” which can start as a cheat, but can quickly mushroom into a full-on binge.

Then come the feelings of despair and self-loathing. Feeling like a failure, you ditch your diet and fall back into your old patterns. The weight you lost soon comes back, along with a little extra. Sound familiar? Here are some common pitfalls that make people fall off the weight-loss wagon:

1. The new wears off
People enjoy things that are new and exciting. It can be fun to start a new diet or exercise routine. You get to try new recipes and new workout routines, and there are gadgets that track all your metrics. Unfortunately, that initial excitement wears off, and the work of maintaining the healthy routine feels overwhelming. Before long, you’ve given up.

2. Too much work
We also tend to have short attention spans and want immediate results that don’t require a lot of suffering on our part. Suffering doesn’t have to be physical pain — though soreness from a new workout routine could count — it can also be hunger or just deprived of your favorite foods, or the effort you’re putting in to food prep and exercise, when you’d rather be on the couch.

3. Unrealistic expectations
If it were possible to lose a huge amount of weight in a short amount of time and keep it off for the rest of our lives, none of us would be in this situation in the first place. Sustained, healthy weight loss and maintenance takes time, endurance, and patience.

If you identify with these pitfalls, you need to employ strategies that will stop you from engaging in the unhealthy dieting cycle so you can ultimately reach your weight loss, health, and fitness goals.


5 Tips to Avoid These Weight-Loss Pitfalls

1. Focus on the big picture
Acknowledge the desire for novelty. If your diet is repetitive or unsatisfying, commit to trying a new recipe. Switch up your workouts. Set mini goals to build in excitement and positive reinforcement. Seek out people who will actively support you and keep you accountable.

2. Accept that “healthy” is a lifestyle
Think of weight loss and maintenance as a marathon rather than a sprint. Your goal is to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes clean eating, exercise, quality sleep, and plenty of daily activity. If you reflect on your struggle with weight, you’ll probably discover that it took you years to get to where you are today. Similarly, it will take time to get healthy and fit, and it will take hard work to stay that way. That’s why the goal is a lifestyle shift, not a temporary diet and exercise phase.

3. Be realistic
Accept your weaknesses. For example, if you know that an upcoming family gathering will be stressful, and it will be hard to stick to your food plan, work around it by planning ahead. Consider what you will eat ahead of time, and stick to that plan.

4. Celebrate your successes
We tend to flourish and succeed at goals when we are praised. Instead of giving yourself a failure label when you go off-plan, accept that you’re a work in progress. Stay away from extreme terms that make you feel hopeless (“failure” is one of them), or drive you to set unachievable standards (like “looking like a supermodel”).

When you achieve something like dropping pounds, or completing several push-ups without resting, or a week of clean eating, or finishing a workout plan, pause and revel in your accomplishments. Reward yourself with a non-food item. Share your success on social media. You may inspire someone else to make healthy changes, too.

5. Develop a strong support system
Many people find that they are more successful with long-term weight loss when they involve others in the process. Announce your commitment to get healthier and stronger to your friends, family, and coworkers. Start or join a fitness support group, or recruit workout buddies and accountability partners to help you stay motivated when your resolve starts to slip.

The Takeaway
If you keep falling short of your weight-loss goals, take some time to examine why you went astray. Remember that nobody is perfect all of the time, and this shouldn’t be the goal. You might have to go through several months or even years of trial and error before you find the routine, habits, exercise, eating plan, and support system that you need to become a lighter, fitter, healthier you. That’s OK. If you stay committed to your health, you will eventually discover what works.

Red, White and Blue Fruit Skewers with Cheesecake Yogurt Dip

24 Servings; serving size: 1 skewer, 1 Tbsp dip

For the skewers:
  • 14 oz angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 72-84 medium strawberries (about 3.5 lbs) stems removed
  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 24 to 28 skewers
For the dip:
  • 4 oz 1/3 less fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup fat free Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup raw sugar

In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese with yogurt, vanilla and sugar. Mix well until sugar dissolves; set aside. Thread 3 strawberries and 2 cubes of cake onto each skewer, alternating between strawberries and cake. Finish each skewer with 3 blueberries. Place finished skewers on a platter and refrigerate until ready to eat. - skinnytaste.com
Mango Salsa

• 1 ripe mango, peeled and finely diced (about 1-
½ cups)
• 2 Tbsp chopped red onion
½ jalapeño, minced (less or more to taste)
• 3 Tbsp fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
• 3 Tbsp fresh lime juice

Put the diced mango, red onion, jalapeño and cilantro in a medium bowl. Toss with lime juice. Serve with fish, steak, tacos, or baked tortilla chips. - simplyrecipes.com

Vegan Berry Banana Shakeology
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1 scoop Vanilla Vegan Shakeology
  • ¼ large banana, cut into chunks
  • ½ cup fresh (or frozen) blueberries
  • ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg

Are You Eating Enough? – May Newsletter

The calendar says it’s spring with summer nipping at its heels, but the warmer weather has left us here in Central PA. Summer and swimsuit season are still lurking around the corner, though. That means it’s the time when many folks begin starving themselves. Did you know that eating too little is just as bad as eating too much? Are you eating enough?

If you don’t know if you’re eating too little or eating too much, message me so we can get you on the right track.  Remember, we deserve to be healthy.
