3-Step Secret to Staying Motivated

When you think of motivation, does it make you recoil and just not even try? I know, motivation is one of those scary words, but what if I told you that we could make it less scary with this three-step process. Would that be of any value to you at all? I hear you saying a huge, YES! Then listen up while I share the secret to motivation with you.

STEP 1. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals.

Specific:
Decide what you want and be specific about it. I want to fit into my wedding dress again. I want to lose 40 pounds. You get the message, right?

Measurable:
Being vague is used as a defense mechanism. If we’re vague, then we can’t hold ourselves accountable. Make it measurable so that you can actually see when your progress begins to show up. Take those measurements every other week. Get on that scale. Try on that dress every other week. Track your progress. We can’t fully achieve that which we cannot measure.

Achievable:
When setting those goals, be honest with yourself. If you set goals that are completely out of reach, frustration will set in, and you’re likely to give up. Set goals that will challenge you, but make sure they’re achievable. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Set that big, hairy, scary goal, but break it down into bite-sized pieces. You can achieve losing 10 pounds. Then another 10 pounds, etc. until you reach your goal. You can fit that dress you were wearing just two years ago. Then fit that dress you were wearing three years ago, etc.

Realistic:
Be realistic. You know what you’re capable of, so go for it, BUT don’t set yourself up for failure by being completely unrealistic with your goals. Don’t baby yourself, but at the same time, be honest with yourself as well. Ask yourself, realistically, is this something I can achieve? If the answer is no, don’t just give up. Just adjust the goal a bit.

Time-based:
Goals are terrific, but they’re useless if you don’t set a deadline to create some urgency. “Yeah, I’d like to fit into that dress some day.” “I’d like to lose this weight some day.” Have you ever said those words or something similar to it? Check your calendar. What month of what year is some day listed? I couldn’t find it on mine. Give yourself a realistic deadline. I personally like to give myself small 30-day goals. Then I break them down into smaller weekly goals. It creates the urgency I need to stay on task and keeps it realistically achievable at the same time.

STEP 2. Help others.
Believe it or not, helping others has a built-in accountability element to it. Before I started helping others get healthier, I was raggedy about staying consistent. Intentionally inspiring others inspires you, too! Win-win!! Think about the last time you helped someone else achieve a goal. Didn’t you benefit as well?

STEP 3. Decide that you CAN.
Decide that you can do this and Never… and I mean NEVER give up on you. You will face obstacles. Life will get in the way sometimes, but you haven’t failed until you give up. Setbacks are okay. Giving up is unacceptable because we deserve to be healthy.
