8 Tips for Exercising in Summer Heat

Summer is the perfect time to go outside and have fun. It's one of my favorite times of year because there are so many outdoor activities to choose from. Everything is more fun outside, whether you're swimming, running, or cycling. Plus, you can stream Beachbody on Demand on your electronic device and work out anywhere you want!

The summer heat can be a problem if you're not careful, particularly in areas with extreme heat and humidity. The biggest heat-related problems are staying hydrated and maintaining your body's electrolytes and salt because your body sweats these essential components right out. This delicate balance of water and electrolytes is crucial to keep your body functioning properly.

If you don't drink enough water, you can get dehydrated and suffer from light-headedness and nausea. If not recognized, dehydration can even result in kidney failure, or in extreme cases, death. However, if you drink too much water without replenishing your electrolytes, you can experience hyponatremia. This can lead to confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures, or even death in extreme cases.

You may not be racing in the desert, but there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to exercising in the heat:
  1. The time of day is important. Unless you are training for an event that takes place in the daytime heat, avoid exercising from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's the hottest part of day. Generally, the early morning is the best time to workout, especially if it's going to be a scorcher that day.
  2. Wear loose, light-colored. The lighter color will help reflect heat, and cotton material will help the evaporation of sweat. You may also want to try specially designed, "hi-tech" running shirts and shorts. They are often made from material meant to keep you cool.
  3. It's important to protect your skin. You can get burned and suffer sun damage to your skin even on cloudy days.Sunscreen is a must.
  4. Take a drink every 15 minutes, even when you're not thirsty. When you're done with your workout, have a few more glasses of water.Stay hydrated. Before you go out, drink a glass or two of water. Carry a bottle of water or even a hydration pack such as the CamelBak.
  5. Try something like SUCCEED capsules - small, simple packs of sodium and electrolytes that keep your system in check.Replenish your electrolyte and salt intake while exercising.
  6. If you can, choose shaded trails or pathways that keep you out of the sun.
  7. Check the weather forecast before you start your workout. If there's a heat advisory, meaning high ozone and air pollution, you might want to take your workout indoors. These pollutants can damage your lungs.
  8. Most importantly, listen to your body. Stop immediately if you're feeling dizzy, faint, or nauseous.
Ultimate Summer Favorite Salad

4-6 servings

Add your favorites, use what you have, and try different herbs each time. Don't miss the optional add-in ideas at the end of the recipe!

4 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
2 cucumbers, seeded and diced
1 green pepper, seeded and diced
1/2 small red onion, sliced
1/2 cup pitted black, or Kalamata olives (optional)
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
3-4 Tbsps olive oil, or avocado oil
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Optional add-in ideas
4 ounces Greek feta cheese, diced
1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
1 Tbsp fresh chopped dill
2 Tbsp fresh chopped mint leaves
1 tsp sumac (Turkish) seasoning

Make Water the Most Delicious Thing Ever!


For the healthiest drinks around, try these infused water ideas. They're a whole lot more exciting than plain old H20. Infused with fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs, they're everything you never knew you wanted in a glass of water. Try infusing your water with these combinations:
  • Strawberry-Cucumber
  • Tomato-Basil
  • Pineapple-Mint-Ginger
  • Orange-Fennel
  • Raspberry-Orange
  • Cantaloupe
  • Tomato-Celery-Bell Pepper
  • Watermelon-Mint
  • Apple-Cinnamon Stick
  • Grapefruit
  • Cucumber
  • Lemon

Berry Coconut Shakeology


There’s bound to be lots of tempting red, white, and blue treats coming your way today, so stave off the calorie-heavy milkshake and cupcake cravings with this festive Shakeology recipe instead.

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 scoop Strawberry Shakeology
¼ cup fresh or frozen raspberries
¼ cup fresh or frozen blueberries (reserve a small amount for garnish)
1 Tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut (reserve a small amount for garnish)
1 cup ice

Place water, Shakeology, raspberries, blueberries, coconut, and ice in blender; cover. Blend until smooth.
